Proper garden maintenance can be hugely rewarding. Nothing beats looking at your beautiful garden after a hard day’s work. It is a hobby, and indeed a job, that perfectly marries creativity and good old hard work. But when you are just beginning your gardening journey, general garden maintenance can feel overwhelming. What are the most pertinent questions you can ask yourself before getting started?

When Should I Fertilise My Lawn?

You do not need to fertilize during the winter months when grass barely grows and there is little need for nutrients. The best time to fertilize would be in spring. Use a slow-release fertilizer to kick-start your lawn as you are heading into summer. Through the summer months, continue fertilizing with a slow-release mix but avoid the hotter times of day to minimize the chance of burn. Fertilise again in autumn to prepare it for the harsher winter months.

How Often Should I Mow My Lawn in Summer?

Mowing your lawn regularly makes your garden look tidy and helps keep the grass healthy as it will be able to feed more uniformly and be more resistant to pests. During summer, mowing your lawn every second week should do the trick. Try and mow in the mid-morning as it will give morning dew and residual water time to be absorbed or evaporate. You will also save yourself the trouble of having to work in the blistering sun.

When Should I Prune My Hedges?

Trimming your hedges at the wrong time of the year can result in a patchy and shoddy looking garden. Hedges and bushes have two growth spurts every year. One in spring, the other one in summer. Prune your hedges in spring to ensure an even, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing growth.

When Should I Water My Lawn?

The best time to water your lawn would be in the early morning. If possible, and if water restrictions allow it, thoroughly water your grass less frequently instead of opting for more frequent, but shorter, watering sessions. It will give your grass the chance to root deeper and get the most out of the soil’s nutrients.
